Dan Maurin, Owner
Subaru Master Technician
ASE Certified Master Technician
I grew up in the Tacoma/Parkland area of Washington and got my start in the automotive repair field at 16 working for a Tacoma Subaru Dealership after school auto detailing and accessorizing. I then moved on to doing pre-delivery inspections on new cars, being given increasing responsibilities and began attending Subaru Technical Classes. In 1981, after graduating from Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma I began working full time at the Subaru dealership as a Certified Technician.
In 1982 the dealership was sold and our new owners relocated and expanded the business, increasing the number of staff from five to thirty. With the growth came experience, schooling and certifications that a smaller dealership could not afford. I was promoted to service advisor but soon realized this was taking me away from the hands on work I loved doing. By 1990 I was a Subaru Master Technician and ASE Certified Master Technician, but soon left the dealership looking for the personalized, one-to-one service I enjoyed at the smaller dealership. I went to work for a Subaru only independent repair facility in Tacoma where I was the Technician and Service Manager. One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job there was the day to day interaction with my customers. The small scale of the shop allowed me to get to know each customer and their car on an individual basis so that they never felt like just a number.
In the Spring of 2003 the owner of the shop decided to retire and sold the business. At that point I was faced with making a decision about my future: I could either return to the dealership or do what I had always dreamed of and use my experience to build a first rate independent Subaru shop. Not wanting to return to the impersonal atmosphere of a dealership I chose to strike out on my own and open ROOpair Specialties in May 2003.
